5 Ways the Arizona Sun Wears On Your Car (and What to Do About It)
UV, heat, and 300 days of sunshine age a car faster than almost anywhere in the country. Here's where the damage shows up first and how to slow it down.
Arizona sunshine is why we live here, and it’s also the single hardest thing on a car in this state. Here’s where it does its damage, roughly in the order you’ll notice.
1. Clear coat oxidation
UV breaks down the clear coat that gives paint its gloss. It starts as a subtle dullness, then becomes visible fading, and eventually the chalky, peeling patches you see on older cars around the Valley. Regular washing removes the contaminants that accelerate it, and wax or ceramic protection acts as sunscreen for the paint. A Buff Wax or Ceramic Wax once or twice a year does more than any product you can buy in a spray bottle.
2. Headlight clouding
Headlight lenses are plastic, and UV turns them yellow and hazy. Beyond looks, clouded lenses scatter light and genuinely reduce what you can see at night. This one has a direct fix: a 40-minute headlight restoration polishes the lenses back to clear and seals them to slow re-clouding.
3. Cracked and faded interiors
Dashboards, door panels, and leather take the same UV beating through the glass, and cabin temperatures north of 140 degrees dry materials out. A windshield shade is the cheapest insurance in the state. Beyond that, interior detailing keeps surfaces conditioned instead of brittle.
4. Baked-on contaminants
A bird dropping in Portland is an annoyance. In Gilbert in July, it’s an acid etching kit with a heat lamp on it. Sap, bugs, and droppings should come off in days, not weeks, which is the practical argument for a regular express wash habit.
5. Water spots that become permanent
Sprinkler overspray and hard water dry fast in the heat, leaving mineral rings. Caught early, a wash removes them. Left to bake for a season, they etch into the clear coat and need machine polishing to fix.
The playbook
Shade or a garage when you can, a wash every week or two, protection on the paint once or twice a year, and don’t let anything organic sit on the finish in summer. None of it is complicated. It just has to actually happen, and that’s the part we’re here for.
